New Captain Tsubasa Anime Soccer Game looks Surprisingly Incredible

It’s no secret that we are pretty big fans of a wide range of anime on Forever Classic Games. I am currently cycling through lots of mecha shows, mostly Gundam, and we are usually watching the latest shows on Crunchyroll. While I typically don’t pursue sports anime, my wife is a big fan of Haikyu!!, Koroko No Basket, Hinomaru Zumou, and more so there’s a lot of time where these stories are on while I’m about. Recently, I found this trailer for an upcoming anime soccer game, two things I usually have zero to no interest in. Despite my lack of interest, I now consider CAPTAIN TSUBASA: Rise of New Champions one of my most anticipated games of the year.

This trailer from Bandai Namco shows off some of the most exaggerated and powerful soccer moves I have ever seen. The sheer impact of each kick and the dynamic zooms and effects is the stuff that fills me with pure, concentrated energy. I’ve never been invested in soccer, aside from the occasional time the World Cup was on at my workplace or something, but this is just the type of thing I want to see more of in sports games. Even though I am not into sports at all, I could see myself playing a game of football, basketball, boxing, or tennis if they had this anime style and being head of heels in love.

Released alongside the trailer, a special message from Yoichi Takahashi, the manga artist and creator of Captain Tsubasa, was shared on the Bandai Namco YouTube channel. In this video, Takahashi reveals some of the core features of the game such as up to four-player matches and what he called “intuitive controls” which could mean a departure from usual sports game control schemes. A press release on the announcement cited the game featuring a Story Mode, Versus Mode, and Online Versus Mode. It also appears that we will be getting Japanese voice-overs with subtitles, something that many anime games feature that also likely reduces the number of resources it takes to localize any given title.

Seeing the Rise of New Champions announcement will also provoke me into searching up the latest Captain Tsubasa anime as soon as possible. Much like my recent exploration of decades of Gundam content, Captain Tsubasa has been around since the 80s with a wide offering of content across manga, anime, novels, and many other games but most of which probably were not localized outside of Japan. In fact, this title will be the first console title for the series for ten years.

All in all, I may have a new obsession and I definitely look forward to playing CAPTAIN TSUBASA: RISE OF NEW CHAMPIONS.

More information about CAPTAIN TSUBASA: RISE OF NEW CHAMPIONS can be found on the official website. The game is slated for a 2020 release for PS4, Nintendo Switch, and Steam.
