KLONOA Phantasy Reverie Series Celebrates 25th Anniversary

Beloved Namco Character Returns

The platforming genre is full of hidden gems, often starring characters created for the mascot craze started by Mario and Sonic. On the PS1, there were tons of exciting titles such as Spyro the Dragon and Crash Bandicoot but those were games exploring 3D platforming as the new technology was being utilized. A few games adopted the 2.5D approach that is beloved by many and Klonoa: Door to Phantomile was considered one of the most charming of the trend, featuring a unique blend of puzzle platforming. As part of the 25th Anniversary of the character, Bandai Namco is releasing KLONOA Phantasy Reverie Series a remake package developed by Monkey Craft (who notably worked on Katamari Damacy Reroll) that includes both the first PS1 game and Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil with updated graphics and features.

Klonoa games, even by today’s standards, have looked great on all platforms. This is mostly because of the charming character design and art direction which uses a lot of bright colors and dreamlike character design. The core platforming games still play great but the remake softens the games’ edges into something truly timeless and presumably tightens up the gameplay. Listings for Phantasy Reverie Series notate that there will be two-player co-op play and adjustable difficulty settings. The new version of Door to Phantomile uses the Wii remake that was released in 2008 as a base. Both games target 60fps and up to 4K resolution on platforms that support it.

The new art direction looks gorgeous and it’s exciting to see Klonoa back in action. These games are often cited as some of the best platformers available. We won’t have to wait long either as KLONOA Phantasy Reverie Series is releasing on July 8th for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and Steam.
