World War Z Expands with Undead Sea Update
Back in 2013, I saw “World War Z” in theaters and didn’t really think much of it. Most of that movie was pretty forgettable, aside from an extremely strong visual of waves of zombies steadily climbing a large wall like an amorphous demon. That image apparently still carries weight, as the recently released World War Z video game from Saber Interactive, in partnership with Focus Home Interactive, has become one of the more popular online games here of late, sporting that iconic mass of undead and over 2 million copies sold.
News of a new update called “The Undead Sea” has come in, giving players a reason to continue their adventures and try to survive the onslaught, but this time on board a ferry in Tokyo that’s filled with feral zombies ready to feast on flesh.
Joining the hoard is a new zombie type, the Infector. This needle-ridden creature sprays survivors with viral sludge that causes zombification if not cleaned off. This beast also takes a page out of Mr. X’s book of Resident Evil 2 fame, as it will come back to life after being put down by gunfire or explosions. Only a melee finisher will put it down for good. Just one more thing to consider as the chaos pitches.
Aside from the new scenario and zombie type, there are some quality changes brought in with this patch. Areas addressed include balancing, private lobbies, the ability to switch classes during PvPvZ matches, and field of view and level of detail sliders for PC players.
More updates are planned. Coming soon is a six-skull difficulty, a Weekly Challenge mode, a wave-based survival mode, and more. Find a full breakdown of the patch notes here.
I’m especially excited about the wave-based survival gameplay. One of my favorite multiplayer types ever is Horde Mode in Gears of War. The insane difficulty, coupled with hectic cooperative play is still one of the most memorable multiplayer experiences I’ve ever had. I’ve been hoping to find another game with a mode just as engaging as what was found in Gears.
It’s awesome to see World War Z use what was established in Left 4 Dead and start to develop into its own thing. Many criticized the similarities between the two but if World War Z continues to improve and Valve continues to just not make games, we may see World War Z become more popular than the zombie giant.
World War Z is available now both physically and digitally for PS4 and Xbox One. It’s available for PC players via the Epic Store. More information can be found on the official World War Z website.
Available now on Steam, Life Eater is a horror game revolving around abduction for ritual sacrifice to halt the end of the world. The game is the latest from Strange Scaffold, the team behind El Paso Elsewhere.
