How to Prepare for Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak

Much like previous large content updates, Monster Hunter Rise is getting a massive premium expansion in Sunbreak. Sunbreak will feature lots of new monsters, quests, armor, weapons, gameplay improvements, and more much like the Iceborne expansion released for Monster Hunter World. Sunbreak is launching on June 30th but players who pick up the game will need to complete the core quests of Monster Hunter Rise before being able to tackle new hunts for fan-favorite Gore Magala or the vampire-like Malzeno.

Note that players must own a copy of Monster Hunter Rise. Sunbreak is an expansion for Rise. Physical copies of Monster Rise: Sunbreak include the core game and the expansion for $69.99 USD. There is currently a digital sale for Monster Hunter Rise, making for a good opportunity for new players to start the game and pick up the expansion later. There is also a demo available for Sunbreak which explains the new mechanics. Sunbreak is releasing simultaneously on both Steam and Switch. There is no cross-progression, character transferring, or crossplay at the time of this writing.

In order to start Sunbreak content, hunters must complete Hub 7 Quest: Serpent Goddess of Thunder, and slay a Thunder Serpent Narwa. This is a multiplayer-enabled quest given by Minoto the Hub Maiden at the Hub Quest Counter. Generally, players can gain this quest by following the critical path of story quests. Capcom has added Black Belt S armor and Defender weapons to help players quickly get to the new content; these items are available now.

Rise players who have yet to purchase Sunbreak will still benefit from the content update. According to an official Capcom note, players will get a portion of the new content such as weapon balance changes, free item packs, and character edit vouchers. Players must have the latest update installed to play online and the expected size is to be about 13GB so players should ensure they have room on their console.

Considering how popular Monster Hunter has become it shouldn’t be that hard to find players for challenging quests. The core story of Rise was enjoyable and we recommend taking one’s time but we do often help new players get to grips with the various systems and we’ve taken down troublesome beasts in the past.
