Evil West Gameplay Trailer Spotlights Cowboy on Vampire Violence

Focus Continues Publishing Third-Person Action Titles

Revealed earlier this year at PAX East, the cowboys versus vampire action game Evil West has shown off plenty of visuals and details in a new gameplay trailer. Evil West was one of the standouts of PAX East due to its bloody western setting and polished gameplay. Even that first demo was solid. I found the combat to be engaging and the monsters to be satisfyingly extravagant. I wasn’t expecting to see Evil West until maybe 2023 but a release date was recently set for November 22nd and the new gameplay trailer shows the breadth of carnage to expect. For action fans, just the spectacle of seeing a gruff cowboy punch a twisted vampire creature with an electrically charged power gauntlet might be reason enough to pick up the game but I think we might be in for a pretty stellar romp through bloodsoaked plains.

Developed by Flying Wild Hog and published by Focus Entertainment, Evil West is a third-person action title similar to God of War, The Last of Us, or A Plague Tale. Games of this genre typically lean more into the cinematic spectacle of combat with lots of camera movement and an emphasis on characters and Evil West looks to fit right in among its contemporaries. Where it differs is a mix of gunplay and physical combat, creating something closer to Devil May Cry but with more grounded positioning and more deliberate timing for big hits or ways to stun opponents.

The various monsters, gadgets, and places all look fantastic and I think Focus Entertainment as a publisher must be excited to have a thumb on this budding genre of action titles. The fire and lighting look particularly good and I’m excited to see where the writing goes. In that early demo, there was a campiness to the gruff characters that were playing scenes seriously but had enough genre tropes to be downright entertaining. I had a ton of fun with that build and I hope the full release results in a satisfying ride through a black sunset of carnage.
