Sony’s February 2023 State of Play shows off PSVR2, Street Fighter, Resident Evil 4, and Suicide Squad

An update on many different projects, plus a deeper dive into Rocksteady’s next DC game

As their first show of 2023, Sony broadcasted a 30-minute State of Play on February 23rd. As they have in the past, the company waited until earlier in the week to announce the showcase was happening. The quarterly update promised showings of upcoming VR titles, other Sony projects, and an extended look at Rocksteady’s upcoming DC Games project Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. We watched the whole show and have a recap ready.

Sony began the show with quick looks at five upcoming PSVR titles, offering value to their newly-released PSVR 2 hardware. The Foglands shows a western landscape as players participate in roguelike gameplay consisting of monsters and ghouls. We saw a look at Green Hell VR, a VR iteration of the popular survival horror title. A new fast-paced shooter, Synapse, was shown including gameplay that promises lots of shooting and psychic manipulation of the environment. Journey to Foundation unveiled a VR world inspired by Isaac Asimov’s famous book series, which also inspired an Apple TV+ original of the same source material. Finally, viewers got to see PSVR’s version of the hit Skybound Games title Before Your Eyes, a narrative adventure that shows a character’s entire life story with each blink of the player. All of these PSVR2 titles are slated for a 2023 release.

Humanity lets players guide humans through a series of puzzles and mazes in pre-set or custom maps

Next, Sony unveiled new trailers to previously-announced projects. Destiny 2 fans got a new trailer for the upcoming Lightfall expansion ahead of its release on February 28th. The gorgeous game inspired by the territory of New Caledonia, Tchia, offered new gameplay and a release date of March 21st. PS Plus subscribers received info on the upcoming PS Plus free games for March, as well as new games added to the streaming catalog. Interactive puzzle feature Humanity showed off gameplay involving herding over 100 human characters across various levels and labyrinths, ending with a May 2023 release window and a limited-time demo available now. Upcoming music narrative game Goodbye Volcano High gave a glimpse into story elements and gameplay, coming June 15th. Lastly, the Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm games have a new entry in the series with Ultimate Ninja Storm Connections, offering both a new story as well as re-cut gameplay and scenes from the previous stories.

Shifting into a more RPG tone, trailers were shown for two upcoming titles. Balders Gate III showed off a narrative trailer and plenty of gameplay to go along with it as well, coming to PlayStation on August 31st. Airship Syndicate’s upcoming MMO Wayfinder also got a bit of developer diary trailer treatment, showing basic gameplay elements and a quick view of the world. PS players can experience the beta exclusively when it launches on February 28th and can sign up for access now.

Capcom came to play during the showcase. First, three new characters were shown in true fighting style for Street Fighter 6. Players can expect to see series regulars Zangief and Cammy as well as a newcomer, Lily. Fighters can play these characters and more on June 2nd. Next, the much-anticipated remake of Resident Evil 4 showed off new narrative cutscenes and gameplay, promising a well-polished game similar to the franchise’s past reiterations. Also, Capcom promised a special demo of RE4 coming soon.

Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League was the main event of the showcase

Finally, the headline preview of the showcase was Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League which showed off an extended gameplay look and commentary from the dev team at Rocksteady. Suicide Squad is an action shooter taking place five years after the events of Batman Arkham Knight, and players can control popular characters Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang, Deadshot, and King Shark in up to 4-player cooperative play. The developers spoke on the traversal and the combat system, showing how players will be doing battle both on the ground and in the air in fast-paced melee and shooting action. Rocksteady is leaning into the RPG aspects of action games, with customizable builds and gear sets for each character. Though they did announce a seasonal battle pass system, developers promised that it would be for cosmetics only. Gamers can get their hands on this high-speed DC game on May 26th.

Let us know in the comments if any of these previews have you excited! If history proves anything, we will have another State of Play preview sometime in April through June, so make sure you check back for more updates on these and more PlayStation titles.
