Ultra Instinct Goku and Kefla Unveiled for Dragon Ball FighterZ

Setting an incredibly high bar for anime games, Dragon Ball FighterZ is arguably the best Dragon Ball fighting game to ever exist. This 3v3 fighter has made it into another EVO tournament, where the best of the best will be competing in Las Vegas starting on July 31st, but there continues to be support for all players in the form of additional fighters. Already we’ve seen the likes of Broly, Jiren, Videl, and more but now a new season has started kicking off with a surprise character for the end of February and the inclusion of Ultra Instinct Goku this spring.

This trailer carries the signature, bombastic energy of the game that is just awe-inspiring. We’ve known about Ultra Instinct Goku for a while now but the second half of the trailer reveals a fusion from Dragon Ball Super.

One of the best moments from Dragon Ball Super is when we get to see the lady Saiyans put out their all in the Tournament of Power that sees multiple teams from various universes clash in an epic battle royale. Pushed into a corner, Kale and Caulifla use the Potara Earrings to fuse into Kefla, taming the monstrous power of Kale with the fighter instincts of Caulifla.

Coming February 28th, Dragon Ball FighterZ players will be able to purchase and download Kefla who looks absolutely incredible. Those more into the mechanics of Dragon Ball FighterZ can probably determine more than I can but she seems like a super fun character to play.

We also get a ton of gameplay footage for Ultra Instinct Goku who seems to carry lots of moves that allow for last-second dodges and counters which could make for some powerful moments in tournaments. It’s always sad to see yet another Goku being added but Kefla’s surprise announcement definitely makes up for it.

There isn’t much additional information out there yet aside from the reveal trailer but keep an eye on Bandai Namco’s official website and social media pages to stay up to date.

With Dragon Ball FighterZ being successful in the fighting game circles and with casual fans, it will be interesting to see how this release affects the quality of future anime titles. It seems like we may be leaving the bad license games of the past behind, or at least we’ll get more great titles from the franchises we love. At the very least Arc System Works are continuing their trend of solid licensed games.

Arc System Works definitely has a lot going for them, they did just release Granblue Fantasy Versus on PS4. Plus, there’s a new Guilty Gear on the way. Those looking to the past should also check out BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle which features tons of characters from the Arc System Works pantheon as well as some really cool guest characters like the cast of RWBY.

Outside of playing these games, I highly recommend checking out the archive footage for the finals of the various Dragon Ball FighterZ tournaments. There’s a great rivalry between SonicFox and GO1 that feels like something ripped straight out of the Dragon Ball Z anime. Just about every match, even at the casual level, feels awesome to watch or be a part of as a combatant. Out of all the fighting games out there, Dragon Ball FighterZ is the most fun to watch aside from maybe Super Smash Bros Ultimate or Melee.

Dragon Ball FighterZ is available now on Steam, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch. Additional characters can be bought individually or in packs.
